LEGENDS MATCH: SEVEN PRE-MATCH VIEWS
Manchester United Legends take on Barcelona at Old Trafford on Saturday, and in the run up to the big game we have rounded up a selection of the best quotes to preview the match.
Bryan Robson’s side carry a two-goal lead into the tie having won the first leg 3-1 at the Nou Camp, and the United manager, his opposite number, and a selection of players have spoken to ManUtd.com and MUTVahead of the clash...
Bryan Robson: “It’s nice to have a club with charisma like Barcelona coming and playing at Old Trafford, and the boys will be well up for it because the tradition between Man United and Barcelona in Europe is there for all to see. They’ve got some real good forwards and midfield players, and we’ve got some real good forwards in our squad, so it’ll be a competitive game.”
Edwin van der Sar: "Of course it's always nice to go back to Old Trafford, I played there in Michael Carrick's testimonial match and I have played in a few other charity games. I'm looking forward to playing against Barcelona in September. Hopefully, we're not going to mess it up! [Laughs] Not many teams go away and win the first leg so we should be able to lift the trophy."
Ruud van Nistelrooy: "I was lucky enough to represent United for five years and the support I received from the fans is something I'll never forget. In that sense, it will be good to go back, show them my gratitude and enjoy the game."
Ji-sung Park: “It will be really great to play there again. It’s all great – the fan support, the dressing-room atmosphere, playing at Old Trafford. It’s good for the fans because they can see the players who have retired playing again. They are not the same as before, but you can see they still have quality. Maybe they will also make some mistakes, which can be quite fun to watch from a fan’s view.
Dwight Yorke: “It’s all well and good that we’ll take some applause for these games, but [the most important thing is] the money that’s raised for the Foundations from Barcelona and Manchester United to support the underprivileged kids - so we’ll continue to support it and that’s why we’re still here playing at 45 - to give them that opportunity.”
Opponent's view - Gaizka Mendieta: “I think for us coming back and playing for Barça again is fantastic. There aren’t many opportunities to do that once you’ve retired – to play in big grounds like the Nou Camp or Old Trafford. I’m looking forward to playing against and with some of the greatest players in football history. United and Barca are two of the biggest clubs in football, so all the ingredients are there for the fans to turn up and create a great atmosphere.”
View from the opposing dug-out – Albert Ferrer: “We will try to turn it around. We are taking to Manchester a mix of experienced players and younger players who can give us some legs in the game, because in this sort of match there is a difference between players who are 38 and 48, so if we mix it up we can be more competitive and tactical. My players will play good, attractive football, but we can be competitive at the same time.”
