How good can Alejandro Garnacho become?
A starring role in Manchester United’s FA Youth Cup win two years ago grew into one as a promising first-team substitute in 2022-23. Then last season saw Garnacho score one of the best bicycle-kick goals in Premier League history, experiment with a new role on the right wing and put United 1-0 up in what became a brilliant FA Cup final triumph over Manchester City.
Across his 50 appearances in the 2023-24 season, United fans grew to love the sight of the 19-year-old, who turned 20 last month, running at tiring opponents. No matter the game, no matter the scoreline, no matter the size, speed or technical ability of the defender being faced, Garnacho backed himself to beat the guy in a footrace before attempting to cut inside and shoot at goal.
Saturday’s Community Shield performance back at Wembley exemplified the good and the great of the young forward.
A second-half substitute, on for Amad just before the hour, he opened the scoring in the 82nd minute, capping off a team move that started with United winning the ball back in their own half.
