United began the campaign in high spirits after a surprisingly good return to form in Erik ten Hag's debut year. Despite inheriting a squad on a downward spiral, the Dutchman managed to galvanise the group leading them back to the Champions League and securing the Carabao Cup.
Such an end to the 2022/23 campaign led to positivity ahead of the new season. Both pundits predicted United would finish third behind Arsenal and Manchester City, with Carragher even claiming Ten Hag's side would finish above Liverpool.

Calling the former centre-back out in the summer, Neville said: "No, hang on a second, last week on something else we did you put Liverpool above Manchester United. You’ve switched your teams around."
To which Carragher replied: "Liverpool have got to sign a holding midfielder. I think Man United have got to sign one as well."
Sadly for United fans, this season has been far worse than expected. The Reds sit seventh, nine points outside the top four and have been knocked out of Europe and the Carabao Cup.
When presented with his pre-season predictions on New Year's Day's Monday Night Football, Carragher could not help but joke: "We should be relieved of our duties for that." Take a look at all of their pre-season predictions below:
