UNITED'S TOP 10 PREMIER LEAGUE GOAL BLITZES
Manchester United's recent win at Swansea City saw the Reds equal the club's previous record for the shortest time taken to score three goals in the Premier League.
Romelu Lukaku, Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial all scored within four second-half minutes and this was the fourth time this has happened. Only counting game time and not strikes either side of the half-time interval, we have listed the fastest three-goal blitzes by United in the past.
Three goals in four minutes
Nottingham Forest 1-8 Manchester United, 06/02/99, Solskjaer 88, 90, 90+2This match will always be remembered for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s four goals after coming off the bench, which all came in the final 10 minutes of the game, after both Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole had already bagged a brace earlier in the game. Sir Alex Ferguson’s side went on to win a famous Treble that season, and the Norwegian finished the campaign with 15 goals from 33 league and cup outings.
Manchester United 3-0 Everton, 07/10/02, Scholes 86, 90, van Nistelrooy 89United powered past the Toffees in 2002 when Paul Scholes netted a couple of thunderbolts either side of a Ruud van Nistelrooy penalty during a frantic finale. The victory proved an important one as the Reds kept pace with then pace-setters Arsenal, before eventually overhauling them in May to finish the Premier League season as champions.
Manchester United 5-2 Tottenham Hotspur, 25/04/09, Rooney 67, 71, Ronaldo 68The visitors led 2-0 at the break, and even the most optimistic of United fan could not have predicted the extraordinary comeback their side was about to embark on. Cristiano Ronaldo started the revival with a 57th minute penalty, before he and Wayne Rooney put Spurs’ helpless defence to the sword with three goals in four minutes. But, it only got worse for the Tottenham faithful, as former fan favourite Dimitar Berbatov finished the job with a fine finish after 79 minutes.
Three goals in five minutes
Manchester United 4-1 Tottenham Hotspur, 09/01/93, Irwin 52, McClair 53, Parker 57Eric Cantona handed United the lead in the 40th minute with a looping header, and the Frenchman turned provider shortly into the second-half to start United’s rout. Denis Irwin latched onto Cantona’s delightful chipped through ball to fire home the Reds’ second in the 52nd minute, before Brian McClair banged one in from distance and Paul Parker finished off a fine flowing move just five minutes after Irwin’s strike.
Manchester United 4-1 Watford, 16/10/99, Yorke 40, Cole 42, Irwin 45A Dwight Yorke bicycle kick got the Reds off to a flyer in this clash, and the Reds didn’t stop there, as his partner in crime Andy Cole nodded in two minutes later, before Irwin scored from the spot shortly after to hand his side a 3-0 half-time lead. Cole then found the net five minutes into the second-half to complete the demolition before Richard Johnson scored a late consolation goal for Watford late on.
Manchester United 6-0 Newcastle United, 12/01/08, Ferdinand 85, Ronaldo 88, Tevez 90On this occasion, United had already powered themselves into a 3-0 lead when the floodgates truly opened after a fine finish from Rio Ferdinand in the 85th minute. Ronaldo slotted home three minutes later to complete his hat-trick, before Carlos Tevez prodded in to complete the rout with his second strike of the afternoon.
Manchester United 4-1 Leicester City, 24/09/16, Mata 37, Rashford 40, Pogba 42Jose Mourinho’s side flew into a 4-0 half-time lead at the Theatre of Dreams as, after Chris Smalling’s opener, Juan Mata, Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba all scored within five minutes to secure all three points. The Reds were almost as quick in the return fixture in February as Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Mata all netted inside seven minutes to earn a 3-1 win.
Three goals in six minutes
Manchester United 9-0 Ipswich Town, 04/03/95, Cole 53, Hughes 54, 59Andy Cole was the star of the show as United cruised to the Premier League’s biggest-ever win, as not only did he score a sensational five goals, he also began the six-minute blitz of Ipswich. United led 3-0 at half-time, but Alex Ferguson’s men were clearly not happy with their efforts as, in the 53rd-minute, Cole netted to complete his hat-trick, before Mark Hughes fired home two goals shortly after to make it 6-0. However, as we all know it only got worse for the Tractor Boys.
Newcastle United 2-6 Manchester United, 12/04/03, Solskjaer 32, Scholes 3’, 38The Red Devils went behind early to a Jermaine Jenas goal, but then a six-minute salvo in which Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Paul Scholes (2) fired Sir Alex’s side into a 3-1 lead. The second half was sensational as Scholes completed his hat-trick, and van Nistelrooy added a penalty late on, as the Reds claimed an important three points in the race for the title.
Manchester United 8-2 Arsenal, 28/08/11, Rooney 64, Nani 67, Park 70Surely one of United’s most famous quickfire routs ever, and probably one of the Premier League’s most famous games, United netted three second-half strikes inside six minutes to put the Gunners to the sword. The Reds led 3-1 at half-time, but eager to extend the Gunners' misery, Wayne Rooney stepped up to net his second direct free-kick of the match in the 64th minute, before Nani chipped in and Ji-sung Park fired home just minutes after to make it 6-1.
