VIDEO: UNITED'S SUPER CUP WIN IN 1991
Manchester United will aim to win the UEFA Super Cup for the second time in the club's history when the Reds take on Real Madrid in Macedonia on 8 August.
Following May's Europa League triumph, Jose Mourinho's men will meet Champions League winners Real at the Philip II Arena in Skopje, just days before the start of the 2017/18 Premier League season.
In 1991, Cup Winners Cup holders United beat then European champions Red Star Belgrade at Old Trafford to lift the trophy for the first time. How the Reds did it, however, remains something of a mystery.
Ultimately, it was Brian McClair's second-half penalty which separated the sides in Manchester, but the result only tells half the story. Just ask the man in the Reds' dugout...
“We were absolutely annihilated that night; they could have been 5-0 up at half-time," Sir Alex Ferguson told ManUtd.com. "The entire Red Star side was terrific. Dejan Savicevic, Darko Pancev, Robert Prosinecki, Sinisa Mihajlovic, Vladimir Jugovic... all brilliant players."
That's not to say United didn't have chances too. There were just two minutes on the clock when Steve Bruce's penalty was saved by 19-year-old Red Star goalkeeper Zvonko Milojevic. Red Star went close several times thereafter, though, including two near-misses by Darko Pancev. Clayton Blackmore was particularly busy, clearing off the line to somehow keep the scores level.
Red Star picked up where they had left off after the break but, against the run of play, United took the lead. Neil Webb’s shot came back off the post, allowing McClair a simple finish from six yards, and that's how it would stay, in spite of more pressure from the visitors.
"We were lucky to get that result," Sir Alex admits. "At half-time I changed things around and dropped Brian McClair into the middle of the pitch. That broke things up a bit and we managed to win."
It may be rare to see United outplayed, especially at the Theatre of Dreams, but the best teams always find a route to victory, and the Reds would go on to claim a further 35 trophies under Sir Alex's stewardship.
